FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH The First United Methodist Church was founded in 1846, twelve years before Minnesota became the 32nd state. It was the first church in Stillwater (the Birthplace of Minnesota), and the first Methodist Church in Minnesota. We are truly THE First United Methodist Church! 1841 - The Rev. Henry Brace was appointed to the St. Croix Mission of the Methodist Episcopal Church. 1846 - The Rev. J.W. Putnam organized the first active and permanent Methodist Church in Stillwater. 1854 - The first church building was built on the north side of Myrtle Street, between Second and Third Streets. 1869 - The second church building was built on Third Street. 1870 - The Swedish Methodist Episcopal Church of Stillwater was organized. 1875 - The first parsonage of the Methodist Episcopal Church was built. 1881 - The Swedish Methodists built their new church building at Fourth and Myrtle Streets. 1945 - The Methodist Episcopal Church and the Swedish Methodist Episcopal Church voted to merge, using the church building at Fourth and Myrtle Streets for Worship. 1952 - Our current property at the southeast corner of Myrtle and Greeley Streets was purchased, and a parsonage was constructed upon it. 1956 - The educational unit was built on the West Myrtle Street property. The stage and fellowship hall were used for Worship.
1960 - The permanent sanctuary, designed by member Wendell Beardsley, was constructed.1984 - The stained glass window project was completed. 1988 - The parsonage was sold and moved to another site by the new owner. 1991 - A major addition was completed on the east side of the church building at a cost of $550,000.
